I posted last week about the criticisms of Dr. Regina Benjamin, President Obama’s choice for surgeon general. The story went from a few blogs and comments to big news last week. Not surprisingly, the story has been picked up by a lot of mainstream media (how often does the media turn down a chance to criticize a woman’s weight and a minority woman at that). Anyway, the vitriol out there is unbelievable but I was particularlly shocked by an interview given by Michael Karolchyk, the CEO of the Anti-gym, to Fox News’ Neil Cavuto:
KAROLCHYK: Would you want Michael Jackson’s doctor to be in charge of drug control at the DEA?
The bottom line is, it is a symbolic position. And obesity is the number-one issue facing our country in terms of the health and wellness. And she has shown, not that she was born this way, not that she woke up one day and was obese. She has shown, through being lazy and making poor food choices, that she is obese. – Fox News
I know part of this is Karolchyk’s being a shock jock and trying to draw attention for himself and his gym. Of course, Neil Cavuto could have tried to discuss Dr.Benjamin’s impeccable qualifications to be surgeon general rather than her weight. But if qualifications were what mattered, Neil whats-his-face would not have been a guest on the show to start with.
::sigh::
